This is a set of two gorgeous red and gold antique books - The First Violin by Jessie Fothergill and The Hinderers by Edna Lyall. The Hinderers was published by Longmans, Green, and Co. in 1902. The First Violin was published by Hurst & Company sometime before 1911. The Hinderers has a textured red cover with lettering in gold and a geometric motif. The First Violin has marbled covers with red corners and spine. Both books have gold lettering and decorations on their spines. First Violin also has marbled endpapers and gilded top pages. The First Violin has 365 pages and The Hinderers has 179 pages. Both books have advertisement pages at the end.
The books are in good antique condition for their age and use. Both books were library discards and have library stamps as well as library rules within their pages. The Hinderers has faint sticker remnants on the spine, most likely from a peeled off library spine label. The First Violin has wear to the spine with missing spine paper from the top section and tearing along the edge. Both books have wear to the corners and edges with some areas of discoloration to the covers. The First Violin also has ink inscriptions. C. B. Acuff wrote their name in ink inside the front cover and Bert Stapp wrote, "Presented to C.B. Acuff -By- Bert Stapp December 25, 1911. Leadwood, Mo." inside the back cover. The pages are yellowed in both books.
First Violin measures 7.5 by 5 inches. It is 1 inch thick. The Hinderers measures 7.75 by 5.5 inches. It is also 1 inch thick.
