Brown Green & Gold Library Book Set Antique Hours in a Library / Literary Studies

This is an antique book set of discarded library books from the turn of the century. The set includes the 1910 edition of Volume II of Literary Studies edited by Walter Bagehot and published by Longmans, Green, and Co. It also includes an undated edition of Volume 3 of Hours in a Library edited by Leslie Stephen and published by G.P. Putnam's Sons. Hours in a Library features a green cover with gold decorations and lettering, especially on the spine. It has gilt top pages. The book covers famous authors such as Charlotte Bronte, Shelley, Rousseau, and Wordsworth. There are 406 pages. The Literary Studies book has brown covers with gold lettering and decoration on the spine, including a sailing ship for The Silver Library logo. The endpapers are decorated with a cream on brown repeating pattern of swans and ships. This book is a compilation of literary essays on famous authors such as Dickens, Tennyson, and Browning from The National Review. There are 402 pages.

The books are in good antique condition for their age and use. Both have general wear to corners and edges with some small fraying or tears along the spine. Both have some discoloration and fading to their colors, but the gold lettering on the spine on both is intact and bright. The gilt pages on Hours is also still bright. Both are discarded library books from Christian College Library in Columbia, Missouri. They have their spine label information hand written in white ink on the spine and several library stamps and pencil notations in the front pages. They also both have library pockets and catalog cards in the back. Both have their spines attached, but the spines of Literary Studies is beginning to crack causing wobble to the pages.

The books vary in size. Literary Studies measures 7.25 inches by 5 inches. It is 1.5 inches thick. Hours measures 8.25 inches by 5.5 inches. It is just over 1.25 inches thick.
